349: A Gandharan Grey Schist Carved Head of a Prince

SKU: 349 Categories: , ,

Description

Beautiful sculpture reminiscent of the best of Hellenistic Greek carvings of a young athlete. The Buddhist prince is wearing a crown which appears to be composed of a cloth part acting as a headband and with exuberant floral elements composed on his head as emblematic of his identity, perhaps signifying that this is a deity relating to springtime and rebirth (Persephone or her Orpheus transported to Bactrian soil?), 2nd century BC. Exhibited on a quality stand.

Size: 4 in. tall (size for the head without the stand)
