307: An Early Ancient Villanovan Bucchero Bowl

SKU: 307 Categories: ,

Description

The Villanovans were only discovered in the 19th century when their cemeteries were first unearthed in the 1850’s in Villanova near Bologna. They are some of the early Iron Age (950-800 BC) inhabitants of the middle and upper part of the Italian Peninsula, and while they are considered as an early part of the Etruscan civilization, the question remains open to debate because while the Etruscans seemed connect their origins to the area around ancient Troy in Asia Minor, the Villanovan civilization seems to have closer ties to Central European Celtic cultures. This open bowl made in a distinctive blackware “impasto” ceramic, is probably a scooping pot for water or wine. Good condition.
