Description
A rare Egyptian bronze incense burner in the form of a lotus flower, Late Hellenistic, or Roman period. While lotus buds and flowers are common in the cultures and art of Asia where the lotus is associated with divinity and transcendence, it is imagery that is encountered less often in Roman and Greek cultures. For the Egyptians however, the mystical qualities that the lotus embodies were well known and ingrained in their art and culture.
