174: Ancient Greek Attic Drinking Cup

SKU: 174 Categories: ,

Description

One notch finer and more elegant than what is found on the market, this wonderful Athenian drinking cup has all the characteristics of a well thought of design and function.

It stands on a single high stem and sports one handle which is modeled to imitate similar cups made in cast bronze. As the user brings her lips to the rim of the cup to take a drink of the water, she is watched over by a stylized benign coiled  serpent water-spirit a nereid which appears on the handle as a female face with flowing hair. Ancient people had strong superstitions relating to water-spirits and when a person was offered a cup of water, in Greek home, it would always come with the wish “drink to your good health”.

Size: 6” to the top of the handle, 5 1/4 “W. overall, 4” in dia.
