Lekythos was the shape of vase that the ancient Greeks used during funeral rites and the vase was interred with the deceased in the tomb; it contained aromatic substances.
White ground lekythoi (plural) were an innovation for the decoration of vases and it was achieved in the mature classical era, as an evolution from the black to the red figure painted vases. The white ground gave the artist greater freedom and flexibility to achieve more realistic expression and greater range of subject matter. Late 5th c. BC.
