Description
An early marble Greek figure of the bust of Hermes (Mercury), Late 6th century BC, good condition. Herms (as they were known) like this especially larger ones were setup at major intersections as street markers or commemorations of particular sites. Hermes was selected to be the deity that informed passersby because he was the messenger god of the Ancient Greeks and as such he was in control of all information!
