Description
From the late Archaic or early classical period, it is a relatively seldom available object depicting a young man, an athlete. His face is dominated by an iconic “archaic smile” and a severity in his facial features which is associated with the sculpture of the Late Archaic period and which, historically, also represents a time of strict social rules and state controls. Wonderful piece.
Provenance: acquired from Bernheimer Antiques, Cambridge, Massachusetts in the late 1960’s.
Size: 3 ¼ head and 7 ¼ with stand
