Description
Anchors of the most ancient ships of the Mediterranean Sea were large stones tied with a braided rope made of plant fibers. This form remained unchanged even through the Roman Period. Before embarking on a sea voyage sailors might pray for good fortune and safe return home by making dedicatory offerings to Poseidon, the mighty god of the seas. This small model of an ancient anchor is such a gift to Poseidon made some 2,000 years ago. Fascinating and interesting object.
