Description

An amazing, and indisputably rare museum object, ancient Steppes artwork of a deer, in a bronze-other metal mixture, it dates to 500 BC. The fascinating cultures of the Ancient Steppes that span from Central Russia to present day Mongolia and China were inhabited by peoples of both Asiatic as well as Indo-European descent. These people are the first cultures to domesticate the horse and they hunted and revered other animals such as the Deer. In fact, it appears that they associated female deer with a happy Afterlife. Exhibitions of the artwork of the Steppes have been numerous. Our present very fine example was probably used as a ceremonial Standard, it was held on a pole and carried either going to war or during religious rites. Exceptional object. Excellent condition.
