Description

A Jain image with silver inlays to eyes and ornaments with extensive inscription to the back, India, fourteenth/ fifteenth century.

An amazing Indian Jain altarpiece from Gujarat in Western India which portrays a highly revered personage, possibly Tithamkarit or Neminatha the Primary Jina. He is seated within a throne composed of different animals shown in outline, King Cobras, horned bovines, deer, crocodiles and he is surrounded by four other jina, one on each side holding a conch and one on each side depicted inscribed  seated in Dhyanasana by his side, making up the five jina representation (in Sanskrit “pancatirthi”) of the Jain religion.

Beautifully and honorifically decorated with silver and copper inlays, principally in the eyes of the central figure, his pectoral area, and the throne. India, 14th/15th century. On the reverse side there is a lengthy inscription.
