Description
A carved wood relief in deep, almost three-dimensional style with a Biblical scene. It depicts “Lot with his daughters”, a classic Biblical example of divine wrath befalling the wicked act for which God punished the errant Lot together with his daughters and his wife who was turned into a pillar of salt. The brimstone and fire of Sodom and Gomorrah was the punishment for the behavior to which humanity had fallen. This plaque was probably part of a large series of similar pieces with didactic subject matter that served as the visual part of religious education for young and older persons in the Old Testament. Size: 10 ¼ x 13 1/8” in a period original frame.
