221: Corinthian Squat Lekythos

SKU: 221 Categories: ,

Description

An Ancient Greek, late 7th century Corinthian squat lekythos in fantastic condition with four animals around the perimeter, a cockerel, a swan, a leopard and a bull, all perhaps convenient for decoration but also symbolic of desired qualities that they embody.

The state of preservation is excellent, and the workmanship can probably be attributed to one of the best Corinthian artists. Corinth in the Archaic Period was richer and stronger than Athens itself, having established colonies all over the Mediterranean Sea and exporting its products to Italy, Asia Minor and Spain.

Size; 3 ¼ in. high by 3 3/8 in. diameter
