Description
An oval carnelian Roman period intaglio depicting a beautifully carved standing female figure who is holding a cornucopia and a ship’s rudder. This depiction of a female deity clearly reveals the purpose for the original Roman ring and its ancient owner.
The intaglio is set in an antique gold finger ring, with a crimped bezel and a simple rounded shank terminating with a split fork at the bezel edge. From the iconography we can easily surmise that this is a ring that was given to a merchant seaman, possibly the owner of a trading vessel and it was given to him as a good wish for luck and prosperity.
The carved intaglio stone dates to the 1st/2nd century AD;
While the gold ring setting is antique, 1800’s.
