244: Important Roman Bronze Figure of Aphrodite

SKU: 244 Categories: ,

Description

Extremely rare type of the goddess of Love as in this depiction she is shown with a separately cast portion constructed as a moveable part of her skirt. It is interesting to note that from the point of view of the artist who created it and the artisan who cast it, it would have been much easier to cast it as one piece. Yet, it was cast as a separate piece; but in addition, the movable part of her skirt, once opened, does not reveal any part of her body anatomy. The exact reason for this intentionally conceived type of the goddess is unknown. It is a type that invites a scholar to write an entire PhD dissertation. It may well be that as it is a well known fact that Aphrodite was venerated in different forms over Greece and the Roman World, with each location having different beliefs and different names for her, much in the way the Virgin Mary has many iconographical schemes and different names all over the Christian World.

Well cast, beautiful detail and in good condition, minor loss due to crystallization of the bronze material in thinner parts of casting. A definite museum piece and worthy of any collection of ancient bronzes>

Size: height 11 ¼ in. with original bronze stand, Aphrodite by herself 9” in. high, 4” inches wide at base.
