Description
An important masterpiece of Gandhara Art, the Buddha standing in contrapposto, a most elegant pose accentuating a well-proportioned body dressed in imperial regalia with diaphanous clothing and bedecked with jewelry of pearls and precious stones. It is interesting to note that the exact gender of the deity is not immediately apparent and possibly intentionally so.
From a scholarly perspective it is also worth noting that this sculpture has survived with a lot of the original ancient polychrome coloration which provides a vivid idea of what Gandhara sculpture looked like when it was created. A rare object.
