Description
Large carved spotted red sandstone medieval period, c. 12th century plaque of Lord Vishnu.
The supreme deity of the Indian Pantheon appears under an elaborate arch, wearing a royal crown and bedecked in fine silk attire accentuated by strands of pearls and other jewelry. In his left hand he holds a mace, symbol or his celestial divine nature. On the left side of the panel we discern the sinuous figure of a female attendant and the entire composition is replete with symbols of divinity and authority.
Condition is good with some missing elements as be expected on a piece of this age (see photos). The plaque is housed in a purpose-built hardwood stand.
From the noted collection of a Harvard Professor, collected in the 1960’s.
