187: Statue of St. Barbara

Description

Based on a medieval 14th century prototype, this wonderful standing figure portrays the Early Christian female saint who defied her father and converted to Christianity and for which act she was tortured and became a martyr. Her iconography shows her always holding a castle turret and a sheaf of palm leaves or as in this case a Gospel.

A terracotta core with sculpted gesso and gilt polychrome surface, and with nice patina.

Very decorative, yet substantial. Good condition.

Size: 26 ¾ “x 11” inches.
