A small masterpiece in white terracotta (clay) it depicts the great beast on burden with extraordinary powers of observation and artistry.
Originally, it was decorated with several colors, red, brown, yellow and black creating a remarkable vitality and true to life likeness. Remnants of these polychromies we can still see on it today.
Portrayals of humans and especially animals during the Tang Dynasty achieved unparalleled heights in their faithful reproduction of realistic features but with a sly artistic admixture of keen observation, humor and even irony. And that is the reason that representations of Tang Dynasty animals continue to fascinate, amaze, and entertain us today.
