322: Tombak Incense Burner

SKU: 322 Categories: ,

Description

An exceptionally fine and early Ottoman Turkish “tombaK” Islamic incense burner

Made of copper and constructed in a “severe Islamic style” as a hexagon with a central circular indentation which receives the burning charcoal and the incense. The hexagonal shape and the decoration are strict, without the later frills and floral motifs of the mature Ottoman Era. It is fire gilt in real gold and has extensive Islamic inscriptions on each of the six side panels. Judging from the severe style we can attribute it to the late 1400’s or somewhat later as a date for its creation.
